Shopping, Market Days & Farmers Markets

Shopping is always a delight! (though some men may disagree of course). Finding a bargain or something a little bit different in an individual artisan shop are all great fun. The choice is yours and accessible both in and around the Yorkshire Dales. Here's a taster for you :

Pre-Christmas Events

Enjoy a pre-Christmas break at one of our cottages and visit the many Christmas shopping events happening across the Yorkshire Dales & slightly further afield. At this special time of year, Betty's in Northallerton/Harrogate & Lewis & Cooper in Northallerton have their amazing Christmas food shops, which are such a treat to visit with lots of things to taste too! We highly recommend them for something special.

City Shopping

York - just over an hour away, park in the 'Park & Ride' on the A59 west of York to avoid the hassles of trying to find the expensive car parking within the city walls. Find the standard high street shops but also such a vast array of quality independent shops and quaint tourist shops in 'The Shambles'. Something for everyone and all with easy walking. A great day out all year round.

Harrogate - an hour away either via the A1 or the scenic route via Masham/Ripon, the quality shopping in this beautiful spa town is always a pleasure. With the main high street shops, there are a choice of quality independent shops. Don't forget a refreshment stop at Betty's either!

Leeds - further afield but if you are looking for city centre shopping, Leeds has it all.

Market Towns

Leyburn - the nearest market town about 7-8 miles from the cottages where you can get most things you need, 7 days a week.

Northallerton - a super Yorkshire market town famous for its market each Wednesday & Saturday, the mouth-watering award-winning grocer Lewis & Cooper, or Barker's Department & Home Stores and many independent shops and galleries such as Joe Cornish Gallery

Hawes - a quant market town in Upper Wensleydale, just down from the Pennine Way. Here you can taste the famous Wensleydale Cheese at the Wensleydale Creamery, see the heritage wood turning displays & tours at Gayle Mill, or visit the old-fashioned sweetshop to revisit your childhood through the sweets you haven't seen for years! The Dales Countryside Museum tells the story of the area and do you know how to make rope? Find out at The RopeMaker. Market day is Tuesday.

Market Days & Farmers Markets

The Yorkshire Dales plays host to a number of regular outdoor and indoor markets as well as a series of farmers markets which take place in many of the towns around the Dales.

Market Days - There are at least 2-3 markets happening every day Monday - Saturday. Checkout which day they are happening where.

Farmers Markets - monthly farmers markets have the most beautiful, tasty produce, from farm gate to plate! Do visit one of the many monthly Farmers Markets happening, not just on a Sunday.

Farm Shops

Keelham Farm Shop an award winning super quality farm shop. Just outside Skipton about 35 minutes drive from the cottages, so worthy of a visit if you are going to Grassington or Skipton.

Mainsgill Farm Shop is an enormous quality farm shop on the A66 west bound, just north of Richmond. Super quality local food and lots of merchandise and presents to tempt you, as well as a very good cafe.

Berry's Farm Shop & Cafe - a lot closer just a couple of miles away at Swinithwaite on the road towards Leyburn (you can't miss it). The cafe is very good and so is the produce at the small farm shop which tempts you as you go through to the cafe. Many of our guests pop in for breakfast on their day of departure!

Supermarket Shopping

Leyburn - The nearest supermarkets to the cottages are in Leyburn. We recommend Campbell's of Leyburn for everything from the basic groceries to the finest cheeses, meats and wines. Do try their deli and meat counters and don't forget to go upstairs to their amazing 'wine cellar' which also features a tasting room where many excellent tastings happen throughout the year. There are an amazing selection to suit everyone's tastebuds and budget. You can even look, but not touch, the £350 Chateau Latour bottle of wine on display! Maybe next time shopping for that one. The Co-op is also across the Market Place for the every day shopping including the post office, meat and fresh bakery in store.

Catterick - the nearest large supermarket is Tesco at Catterick Garrison - almost 20 miles from the cottages. We don't need to remind you what they stock! They also do deliver (along with Asda from Skipton) to your cottage.
